KINUTA-UCHI
One of the Mutamagawa Series

Color on paper
Hanging scroll
Signed Hokusai, sealed Gakyojin
88.2~41.0cm

This picture painted by Hokusai portrays an old farmer and his wife beating a kinuta fulling block. The rustic setting consists of a thatched roof farm house and autumnal blooms.
The scene is based on the Mutamagawa, a popular setting for the fine arts of the time. KINUTA-UCHI is believed to have covered one part of a six-frame folded screen. Outlines are based on light touches, and different shades of color. The brilliant techniques represented in this piece reflects yet another side of Hokusai's extraordinary artistry.
