TAITO Period
1810 - 1820

Hokusai began using the name Taito from 1810. He continued to produce yomi-hon illustrations, but the main focus during the Taito Period was on the edehon works. Edehon began as a kind of guide for apprentices but later expanded its repetoire with design and sketch collections.



1810 Bunka 7 51 Began signing his works as Taito.
Death of Segawa Kikunojo III at age 60.
1811 Bunka 8 52 CHINZEI HACHIRO TAMETOMO ZU, brush painting signed Katsushika Hokusai Taito, sealed Raishin with a handwritten poem by Kyokutei Bakin.
RYUHATSU SHINWA UKIYODOKO Part I, kokkei-bon text by Shikitei Sanba.
1812 Bunka 9 53 Spends fall in Nagoya and prepares sketches for HOKUSAI MANGA.

RYAKUGA HAYAOSHIE Quick Guide to Drawing Part I, edehon, preface signed Tengudo Nettetsu.

1813 Bunka 10 54 Painting of Two Carp and Tortoises signed Hokusai, sealed Kimodasoku with inscription of Hokusai.

HOKUETU KIDAN Strange Tales of Northern Echigo, yomi-hon text by Tachibana Mosei, signed Katsushika Hokusai.

1814 Bunka 11 55 HOKUSAI MANGA Random Sketches by Hokusai Part I, signed Katsushika Hokusai. Part II through XV were published later.

1815 Bunka 12 56 BEI-BEI KYODAN A Rustic Tale of Two Heirs, yomi-hon text by Kyokutei Bakin, illustrations signed zen Hokusai Taito.

ODORI HITORI KEIKO Teach Yourself the Dance, signed Katsushika Hokusai, illustrations edited by Fujima Shinzaburo.

SYOHON JITATE Part I, gokan text by Ryutei Tanehiko, illustrations by Utagawa Kunisada.
Death of Torii Kiyonaga at age 64.
1816 Bunka 13 57 SANTAI GAFU Painting in Three Aspects, edehon signed Hokusai aratame Katsushika Taito.
Death of Santo Kyoden at age 56.
1817 Bunka 14 58 October 5, public event held at Nishikake-sho, Nagoya during which Hokusai painted a Daruma.
Ships from England arrive at Uraga.
1818 Bunsei 1 59 KIKYO Chinese Bellflower, hanging scroll, brush painting signed Hokusai Taito, sealed Fumoto-no-sato. Believed to have been painted in the late Bunka era (1808 - 1818).

NANA KOMACHI Seven Figures of Ono-no Komachi, eight-fold screen, brush painting, signed Hokusai aratame Taito, sealed Kimodasoku. Believed to have been painted in the Bunka era (1808 - 1818).

Death of Ino Tadataka at age 74.
Death of Shiba Kokan at age 72.
1819 Bunsei 2 60 EHON HAYABIKI Quick Pictorial Dictionary Part II, edehon signed zen Hokusai Taito.

Hokusai is said to have bestowed the art name Taito upon his apprentice during this year.

Death of Katsukawa Shun-ei at age 58.
